This webpage provides an overview of how much available space in District and some charter buildings is in use and the condition of District buildings. It is a helpful starting point to explore if there is enough space in buildings of varying ages to accommodate students living in an area.

 

K-8 BUILDING USE AND CONDITION: CITYWIDE SUMMARY

 

2017-18 District K-8 Building Utilization and Empty Seats

  • Overall, about 25% of seats in District K-8 buildings are empty. There is enough unused space in District K-8 buildings to accommodate at least 8,000 more students than are currently enrolled. Nearly half of these empty seats are in schools rated A, B, or C.
  • Reported charter capacity points to more than 3,000 additional empty K-8 seats, suggesting there are more than 11,000 excess seats in K-8 buildings across the city.
  • The Northeast and West regions have the lowest building utilization rates, while the Near West and Southwest have the highest.

2017-18 District K-8 Enrollment in New or Renovated Buildings

  • 65% of District K-8 enrollment is in buildings constructed or renovated since 2002, when the current building campaign launched.
  • The Near West and West regions have the lowest proportion of students enrolled in buildings that are new or renovated since 2002, while the Northeast and Southeast have the highest.

K-8 BUILDING USE AND CONDITION: SUMMARY BY REGION

Northeast

2017-18 District K-8 Utilization by Building Age

  • 63% of CMSD K-8 seats are utilized, the lowest of any region. Current building use suggests at least 2,700 empty District seats in the region, with at least an additional 700 open charter seats.
  • 81% of students attending District K-8 schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002. Only four of the 16 District K-8 buildings in this region pre-date 2002.
  • The 12 new buildings in operation in this region have enough capacity to serve all students forecast to attend District schools in this region with additional open seats remaining.

East

  • 79% of District K-8 seats are in use, leaving approximately 1,000 empty seats in District schools in the region and roughly 250 empty charter seats.
  • 63% of students attending District K-8 schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002. Four of the nine District K-8 buildings in this region predate 2002.
  • New buildings have capacity to serve most, but not all, students forecast to attend District schools in this region in the future.

Southeast

  • 72% of District K-8 seats are in use, leaving approximately 1,300 empty seats in District schools in the region and close to 1,000 empty charter seats.
  • With the opening of the new K-8 buildings in the region this year, 95% of students attending District K-8 schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002. Only one of the District K-8 buildings in this region pre-date 2002.
  • The 11 new buildings in operation in this region have enough capacity to serve all students forecast to attend District schools in this region with additional open seats remaining.

Near West

  • 87% of District K-8 seats are in use, leaving approximately 800 empty seats in District K-8 buildings in the region and just under 750 empty charter seats.
  • 52% of students attending District K-8 schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002, one of the lowest rates of any region. Six of the 14 District K-8 buildings in this region predate 2002.
  • New/renovated buildings could not serve all students forecast to attend District schools in this region in the future.

West

  • 64% of District K-8 seats are in use, leaving approximately 1,700 empty seats in District schools in the region and roughly 500 empty charter seats.
  • 28% of students attending District K-8 schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002, the lowest rate of any region. Five of the eight District K-8 buildings in this region have not been built new or renovated since 2002.
  • New/renovated buildings could not serve all students forecast to attend District schools in this region in the future.

Southwest

  • New/renovated buildings could not serve all students forecast to attend District schools in this region in the future.

2017-18 District High School Building Utilization and Empty Seats

 
  • District high school enrollment is more than 9,000 students below adjusted building capacity. This means that roughly 40% of building space currently in operation today is unused.
  • The Near West, Northeast and East have the lowest utilization rates, while the West and Southwest have the highest.

2017-18 District High School Enrollment in New Buildings

 
  • Approximately 57% of students enrolled in District high schools are served in buildings that have been newly constructed since 2002.
  • There are large regional gaps in the percentage of District high school enrollment in new or renovated buildings versus those constructed prior to 2002. The Near West gap will close with the opening of the West Side High School.

  • 47% of District high school seats are in use, leaving approximately 7,000 empty seats in these regions.
  • Approximately 46% of students attending District high schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002. Eleven of the 23 District high schools are operating in buildings newly built or renovated since 2002.

 


 

Near West, West and Southwest
