EAST K-8 REGION OVERVIEW

Neighborhoods include Downtown, Central, Fairfax, Kinsman, Buckeye-Woodland, and Buckeye-Shaker Square.

UPDATE: Through a series of regional meetings in April, we engaged with more than 500 members of our community around the Citywide Analysis and gathered over 300 feedback forms in which those attendees shared their insights, ideas, and questions as they relate to the Analysis.

  • There are no District or charter K-8 schools rated A or B in the region and only 9% of enrollment is in C-rated schools. 91% of regional enrollment is in schools rated D or F.
  • The East Region has the lowest access to high quality seats of any region. Central, Fairfax, and Kinsman do not have any A, B or C-rated schools located in those respective neighborhoods.
High School Takeaways
  • 25% of high school residents attending a District or charter school attend an A, B or C-rated school.
  • This is the second highest rate of any region in the city and is driven in part by the proximity to the criteria-based high schools in University Circle.

  • Overall regional enrollment declined from 2013 to 2017, though District schools experienced a 7% enrollment increase, due to large charter enrollment declines.
  • Combined K-8 enrollment is forecast to decline 2.4% by 2022-23.
  • 60% of K-8 students residing in the region attend District schools over other options.
  • 50% of students residing in the East region choose to attend a District or charter school outside the region, which is the highest rate of any region.

  • High school enrollment is forecast to remain relatively flat by 2022-23.
  • 60% of residents attend a District high school over other options, one of the highest rates in the city.

  • 79% of District K-8 seats are utilized, leaving approximately 1,000 empty District seats in the region and roughly 250 empty charter seats.
  • 63% of students attending District K-8 schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002. Four of the nine District K-8 buildings in this region pre-date 2002.
  • New buildings have capacity to serve most, but not all students forecast to attend District schools in this region in the future.
High School Takeaways
  • 60% of District high schools seats are utilized. Current building use suggests 1,000 empty District seats in the region.
  • 33% of students attending District high schools are served in buildings that are newly built or renovated since 2002.

  • 33% of District K-8 schools are above the minimum enrollment target of 360 students, the second lowest rate of any region. Two of the nine schools in the region meet the desired enrollment target of 450 students.
  • Charter closures in the area in recent years have allowed most District schools in the region to maintain or increase enrollment, with only one District K-8 school experiencing a negative enrollment trend over the last five years.
High School Takeaways
