UPDATE: Through a series of regional meetings in April, we engaged with more than 500 members of our community around the Citywide Analysis and gathered over 300 feedback forms in which those attendees shared their insights, ideas, and questions as they relate to the Analysis.

  • 34% of enrollment in the region is in schools rated A, B or C. 66% of enrollment is in schools rated D or F.
  • There is varied performance between the four neighborhoods in the West region, but all have at least one District or charter school rated C or better.
High School Takeaways
  • 12% of high school residents attending a District or charter school attend an A, B or C-rated school.
  • This rate is well below any of the east side regions in the city for access to quality high schools.

K-8 Takeaways
  • K-8 enrollment grew by 130 students, or 2%, from 2013 to 2017. District schools experienced all of this gain, while charters slightly declined.
  • Combined K-8 enrollment is forecast to stay flat through 2022-23 with no significant shifts between charter and District share.
  • 56% of K-8 students residing in the region attend District schools over other options. Of these, only 55% choose to stay within the region, the lowest rate of any region.
  • 39% of students are leaving the region to attend a District or charter school, the second highest rate of any region behind the East region.
High School Takeaways
  • High school enrollment is forecast to grow 9.9% by 2022-23, an increase of 265 students.
  • 56% of residents attend a District high school over other options.

K-8 Takeaways
  • 64% of District K-8 seats are utilized, leaving approximately 1,700 empty District seats in the region and roughly 500 empty charter seats.
  • 28% of students attending District K-8 schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002, the lowest rate of any region. Five of the eight District K-8 buildings in this region pre-date 2002.
  • New or renovated buildings could not serve all students forecast to attend District schools in this region in the future.
High School Takeaways
  • 91% of District high schools seats are utilized, the highest rates of any region. This results in roughly 300 empty seats in the region.
  • 68% of students attending District high schools in the region are served in buildings that are newly built or renovated since 2002, the second highest rate of any region.

  • 71% of District K-8 schools are above the minimum enrollment target of 360 students, which is the highest rate of any region. Three of the seven regional schools meet the desired enrollment target of 450 students.
  • Most District schools in the region (five of the seven) have experienced a steady or positive enrollment trend over the last five years.
High School Takeaways
  • The two largest high schools in the city are both located in the West region and represent the only high schools in the city that exceed the desired enrollment target of 500 students.
  • Of the nine District high schools in this region, those are the only two that also exceed the minimum enrollment target of 400 students.
