NORTHEAST K-8 REGION OVERVIEW

Neighborhoods include North Shore Collinwood, Collinwood-Nottingham, Euclid-Green, Glenville, Goodrich-St. Clair-Superior, Hough and University.

UPDATE: Through a series of regional meetings in April, we engaged with more than 500 members of our community around the Citywide Analysis and gathered over 300 feedback forms in which those attendees shared their insights, ideas, and questions as they relate to the Analysis.

  • 25% of enrollment in the region is at schools rated A, B or C, though only 44 students attend a B-rated school and no A-rated schools are located in the region.
  • 75% of regional school enrollment is in D or F-rated schools.
  • There are C-rated schools spread across the region.
  • Glenville does not have any schools rated higher than a D located in the neighborhood.
High School Takeaways
  • 34% of high school residents attending a District or charter school attend an A, B or C-rated school.
  • This is the highest rate of any region in the city and is driven in part by the proximity to the criteria-based high schools in University Circle.

  • When combining students across sectors, K-8 enrollment declined 8.4% from 2013 to 2017, with charter schools declining by 4% and District schools declining by 12%.
  • Combined K-8 enrollment is forecast to decline 8.6% by 2022-23, the largest decline of any region.
  • Only 51% of K-8 students residing in the Northeast region attend District schools over other options. This is the lowest rate of any region.
  • Of the students that do attend District schools, 81% attend a school within the region, the highest rate of any region.

  • High school enrollment is forecast to decline 6.1% by 2022-23, the largest decline of any region in the city.
  • 58% of residents in this region attend a District high school over other options.

  • 63% of District K-8 seats are utilized, the lowest rate of any region. Current building use suggests 2,700 empty District seats in the region, with at least an additional 700 open charter seats.
  • 81% of students attending District K-8 schools are served in buildings that are newly built since 2002.
  • The 12 new District buildings in operation in this region have enough capacity to serve all students forecast to attend District schools in the region with additional open seats remaining.

  • 43% of District high schools seats are utilized, among the lowest rates of any region. Current building use suggests 4,300 empty District seats in the region.
  • 50% of students attending District high schools are served in buildings that are newly built or renovated since 2002.

  • 19% of District K-8 schools are above the minimum enrollment target of 360 students, by far the lowest of any region. None of the District schools in the region meet the desired enrollment target of 450 students.
  • Nearly half of District K-8 schools have experienced a negative enrollment trend over the last five years and only one school has a positive enrollment trend.
  • Regional enrollment has declined by 8.4% since 2013 and is forecast to decline another 8.6% by 2022-23, both the largest declines of any region. These trends suggest it will continue to be challenging for many schools in the region to achieve even minimum enrollment targets.
High School Takeaways
  • 20% of District high schools are above the minimum enrollment target of 400 students.
  • No regional District high schools meet the desired enrollment target of 500 students.
