6th Grade Summer Reading

  • Welcome to the Middle Years Program!

As you lean into the higher expectations and rigor set for you as middle schoolers, you are required to read one book this summer from the provided list of diverse titles and complete the tissue box assignment. You do not need to spend money to purchase a book, but you’re more than welcome to! We recommend visiting your local library branch and checking out the book of your choosing. (PS many libraries offer summer reading programs where you can get rewarded for your reading!) Through the Sora App located on Clever, you also have access to
Cleveland Public Library’s digital and audiobook database. (directions to access here).

Your English teachers challenge you to find books that transport you to other worlds, see things from different perspectives, and leave you thinking, wondering, and in awe. We cannot wait to hear all about your summer reading journeys!

8th Grade Summer Reading Requirments

  • It is official! You are now 8th graders!
Your mission this year is to be the most prepared for high school: academics, behavior maturity, and ATL skills. To acclimate (prepare & transition) to the academic rigor (intensity/ toughness) you will face this upcoming school year, you are required to complete summer work. Your assignments will be due the first week we return to school and will count as the 1st grades of the new school year. It is also your 1st chance to make an impression and represent yourself as a scholar.

Task 1: Write an email to Ms. Lorek introducing yourself as a reader.

Task 2: Select a Fiction book from the list & complete a one-pager.

Task 3: Select a Non-fiction book from the list & complete Themes and Lessons Learned.

Task 4: -OPTIONAL- In 8th grade, all assignments are graded on IB rubrics. To achieve the top score of an 8, you must put in additional time and effort reading a 3rd book from either list or an independently selected, grade-appropriate book and complete the brief accompanying task.
