2020-2021 School Choice

"Our goal is to ensure every child in Cleveland attends a high quality school and that every neighborhood has a multitude of great schools from which families can choose."
- The Cleveland Plan

Students and families can begin choosing schools for the 2020-21 school year in December and January, with the portal opening on December 2 for high school choices and on January 13 for K-8 school choices. The portal will remain open through March 13, 2020.

As families explore the many options available, posted below are several choices affected by the Board of Education's recent approval of recommendations for long-term planning of CMSD schools.

West Side Campus

The new campus will include Garrett Morgan School of Science and a new model that focuses on mass communication and social justice, both with a college preparatory curriculum that includes opportunities for students to explore careers, earn college credit during their high school career, participate in the arts as well as in business partnerships and mentorships tied to each student's academic interests.

As these new opportunities are finalized, students and families will be provided with more comprehensive information.

Visit

  • Schedule a tour at schools in which you are interested
  • Schedule your child for a “shadow day” at the schools you are considering
  • Attend open houses and information sessions at schools you are considering
  • Ask about what sports, clubs and other activities each school offers

Apply

Complete your application in the school choice portal
Select up to 5 school choices
Be sure to mark your choices in the order of preference

The first step is to enter the School Choice Portal and create a “family account” to get started.

Create one family account by completing an application for each child when you apply to a new school:

  • provide an email address
  • create a username
  • set a password

Families are required to create a new family account each year an application is submitted for your child. The same email address or username may be used to create your new account.

Parents and guardians use a single-family account to create, save, edit and submit an application for each child in the family who is applying to a new school. Families will use this account to view lottery results and positions on school waiting list, if necessary. Creating an account with an email address is recommended.

Accept

  • Log back into the school choice portal and ACCEPT your child’s school choice by the deadline
  • You may DECLINE a choice if you would like to accept another school on your list
