    Current Status of CMSD Volunteer Program:

    • Volunteers will be permitted to serve in school buildings, please remember you are required to sign-in with school office and have school staff print your Volunteer Name Badge from the Volunteer Portal of the RAPTOR Visitor System. This will identify you to staff and scholars during your service.
    • Due to COVID-19 protocols, number of individuals/space availability may be limited for certain volunteer opportunities. Please check with your school.
    • Additionally, everyone is required to wear a face mask as they serve in the school building.


    CMSD Volunteer Registration Guidelines for School Year 2021-2022


    1. Parents and Individuals not part of a Community Group must complete the electronic Volunteer Application Form (English – Español). Note that this is an update for this School Year (Volunteer Application is the volunteer’s request to serve with CMSD).
    2. Everyone, except for Community Group members, need to complete the Volunteer Application form. If they have volunteered with the district previously they may indicate this on the application. Contact information will need to be updated for returning volunteers (i.e., address, telephone numbers, email address, and emergency contact information).
    3. Principals and/or a designee (Volunteer Lead); and/or CMSD Department Staff working with Volunteer Groups, will follow up with applicant and accept or deny the volunteer applicant's intent of service.
    4. When approved, volunteers will then receive a link to complete their Volunteer Registration and security clearance information. Please refer to the Security Check Protocol Chart located on this page.
    5. All CMSD Volunteers must agree to follow school COVID protocols. i.e., masks, social distancing, hand washing, sanitation processes.
    6. All Volunteers must Sign in and out of the building through RAPTOR Volunteer Portal on day of service. They are required to wear the printed RAPTOR temporary ID/Name badge throughout their service. It must indicate “VOLUNTEER” and not “VISITOR”. Volunteers should never sign-in on “binders” or “Sign-in Sheets” this does not confirm the approval status of a Volunteer.
    7. All volunteers must agree to complete a temperature check and wellness check prior to reporting to the school building.  Volunteers shall not report to a building if they are feeling unwell.
    8. Volunteers are expected to maintain a professional and respectful attitude at all times.

    CMSD Guidelines for Virtual Volunteers:

    • All virtual volunteers are required to follow the existing Volunteer Registration guidelines for individual or group volunteers.
    • The District recommends, where feasible, to have a second adult as a monitor during one on one sessions. Where this is not feasible, we recommend one on one sessions be recorded with parental consent.
    • Volunteers cannot require students to share, display themselves, or be visible through video. Facilitators can encourage students to share, display themselves, or be visible through their video, but to protect students’ psychological and emotional safety, students can choose to turn their video on and off at will (as long as it is not a distraction to others).  


    CMSD Volunteering for Minors:

    • If volunteer is a minor (17 yrs. and younger) they must complete the Minor Volunteer Application packet, once completed, scan and send to: judith.lozada@clevelandmetroschools.org.
    • Please note if minor is volunteering individually for service hours and during school day time hours they must have signature of their school Principal or school staff representative.
    • Minor Volunteers are not required to complete a security clearances. Minor Volunteers will receive notification by email.
    • Minors are required to serve under staff supervision at all times and never left alone with scholars.



    • All parent and individual volunteers are subject to a security check. Once you have completed the electronic application and selected the volunteer function. School Administrator will be notified of your interest to volunteer and once we receive their approval, you will recieve via email the electronic CMSD Registration form to complete. 
    • The cost of the low-level security check is FREE to Parents and College students.
    • The main contact of a Community Group/Organization is responsible of ensuring that their members have completed the required security checks and provide the date of security check approval of each group member as part of the registration process and approval. Please contact volunteer manager with questions.
    • If your volunteer service requires a state and federal clearance (BCI/FBI check), this check can be obtained through our Safety and Security Department. For scheduling details please click here.
    • Volunteers are responsible to follow up with this office for results, due to privacy laws you must request results to be sent to the Volunteer Manager. Please be aware the cost is $47.25 (FBI $25.25/BCI $22.00) payable by money order.
    • The BCI/FBI checks can also be completed at your local police station or in select DMV locations.
    • Please mail results indicating the volunteer location (school/department) and community group (if applicable) to: CMSD District Manager of Volunteers (view contact information below).

    CMSD Volunteer Identification:

    • All volunteers must be identified while serving in the school.
    • Upon arrival at the school please check in with school office where you will sign-in for your Volunteer Service. Once service is completed, volunteer must check out with the school office.
    • Please have your state issued ID ready to present to school office staff.
    • If you volunteer in more than one school building, make sure that you have indicated in your registration the schools where you will be volunteering. Volunteers are not automatically registered to serve in all schools.
    • Volunteers can begin serving at the school once cleared with their security checks and Volunteer Office has uploaded contact information and documentation to the RAPTOR Security System's Volunteer Portal.


    To enter a school building to volunteer you will need:

    • During school day and due to COVID-19 restrictions, if school staff is not expecting you, we ask that you call in advance for an appointment.
    • A mask is required for all visitors who wish to enter a CMSD building.
    • All Volunteers must provide a legal form of identification at the school office: driver's license, state ID, passport, etc. to check-in with the front office staff of the school building.
    • We have phased out the Volunteer ID Card badge, this has been replaced by the RAPTOR Security System badge print-out, serving to identify you once you have entered the school building.
    • Your print out badge should indicate VOLUNTEER and not VISITOR.


    Volunteers must comply with the following:

    • All student records are considered confidential.
    • Directory information including the student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially-recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received and previous educational agencies or institutions attended, can only be shared with administrative approval.
    • Volunteers may not discuss or repeat information overheard while in the staff lounge, classrooms, offices, school grounds, hallways, school or extra-curricular activities.
    • Volunteers may not discuss information obtained while in a classroom, such as a student's grade or behavior, with anyone other than the student's teacher or the building principal.
    • Concerns or questions regarding student records or issues of confidentiality should be brought to the attention of the staff member responsible for supervising your activities and/or the building principal.
    • Volunteers may not take pictures, videos or feature students on any form of media, unless this is part of the volunteer's designated function at the school.
    • Any knowledge of a violation of these provisions must be immediately reported to the staff member responsible for supervising volunteer activities and/or the building principal.
