12-29-2021 Winter Break COVID Update

December 29th, 2021

Dear Students, Families and Educators:

I hope that all of our students, families, and educators are continuing to enjoy your well-deserved winter break.

As I shared last week, I have been in direct communication with local and state health officials, including the director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, the director of the Cleveland Department of Health, and the interim state superintendent of education and have sought and received guidance from the Ohio Department of Health regarding how best to resume classes when most students and staff return next week.

Based upon the currently available health data and the guidance I’ve received, CMSD will be implementing our remote learning plan for all District schools for the week of January 3rd, including for the staff professional day on Monday and all student classes on Tuesday through Friday.  Students should follow their normal school day schedule and log on to their classes remotely as directed by their teachers throughout the week.  It is critically important that students fully participate in this remote learning week as part of their attendance and classroom instruction.

All schools will be open for families who need to pick up meals for your children. Families may pick up meals at the CMSD school closest to your home, even if it is not the school your child attends.  School buildings will also be open on Monday, January 3rd for any student who needs to pick up his/her laptop or tablet and other school materials.

School athletics and extracurricular activities will continue to use our current extracurricular protocols, with coaches holding only essential games and practices.  We will also continue to limit attendance to athletic and extracurricular events to three guests per student.

As a reminder, please report all positive COVID cases to us as they occur by calling our COVID hotline at 216-838-9355 or emailing covid@clevelandmetroschools.org. Accurate reporting of COVID cases among our students and staff is critical to helping us make quick, effective decisions about the potential need to quarantine a class or school.

And I would again urge those of you who are eligible to be vaccinated to take advantage of those opportunities as an additional way of protecting your health and the health of those around you.

We will continue to monitor the health data throughout the week to determine our ability to return to in-person learning, hopefully for the week of January 10th, and I will update our entire school community again early next week.

Happy holidays to every member of the CMSD community.  Enjoy the rest of your winter break!

Sincerely,

Eric S. Gordon
