• Bridging the Digital Divide

The COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on families exposed longstanding inequities in society, including lack of access to the internet and digital tools critical to success in education and the economy.

Nowhere was that more evident than in Cleveland, which has been ranked as the least connected major city in the United States. When remote learning began, about 40 percent of CMSD families did not have access to reliable high-speed internet service and two-thirds were without a laptop or tablet suitable for education.

Chief Executive Officer Eric Gordon has called on policymakers to treat the internet like a public utility instead of a luxury. Through its own efforts and assistance from partners, CMSD has ensured that all current students have devices for learning and that their families receive free internet access, but the need will continue into the future.

CMSD pays to connect District families to high-speed internet from DigitalC. PCs for People provides affordable computers and low-cost internet to eligible individuals and nonprofits. To donate directly to either of these nonprofits, click on the icons below.
