CEO Focus

Greetings CMSD families and friends,

April is set aside annually to recognize community volunteers. It gives me great pleasure to celebrate the nearly 1,000 registered CMSD volunteers and 80 registered community partners who generously give their time and resources to support our scholars and uplift our staff. We could not succeed without them.

This year’s volunteer appreciation theme is Better Together! That statement could not ring truer. Our volunteers and community partners provide essential support along a spectrum of services that includes literacy and financial tutoring, mentoring, social-emotional support, wellness, arts, and recreation, among other support services.

There are far too many groups and individuals to list the extraordinary volunteerism routinely given. However, I am happy to offer Gail Reese as a shining example of the type of grassroots volunteerism that has long made a profound difference.

Almost 18 years ago, Gail, a 1971 John F. Kennedy High School (JFK) graduate, was inspired to start a volunteer mentoring group outside of her church. She selected JFK to launch literacy and anti-bullying initiatives. Her vision quickly expanded to other CMSD schools. Working closely with pastors and principals, she realized she could help form partnerships that lead to a natural support system for scholars, staff, and families. She called her initiative the Adopt-A-School Network.

Today, working closely with Tracy Hill, Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement, and Judith Lozada, Manager of Volunteers and Special Projects, Gail’s Adopt-A-School network operates in 25 CMSD schools and has expanded to school districts outside of CMSD.

“It brings me tremendous joy to see how our network of churches is able to work with schools to ascertain their needs and then to respond as a community,” said Gail.

“When we put a smile on the face of a child and the educators, we know that we’re working in service of children and their families. I love this work,” she added.

It is with a profound sense of appreciation that I extend my heartfelt thanks to the collective force of volunteers and community partners. Your unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of CMSD students and advancing the critical work of the District is truly commendable. Together, we are making our community a better place.

Yours in gratitude,

Dr. Warren Morgan

Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School

Principal Tim Jones used his recent moment in the CMSD Board Spotlight to describe the mission of one of the more unique schools in the District. Davis A&M is a creative partnership between CMSD and Argonaut, a non-profit community partner that collaborated to establish the school in 2017.

The Davis partnership embeds college readiness and hands-on industry training into a core curriculum, expanded learning opportunities, internships, and paid work experiences.

“Through the partnership with Argonaut, Davis A&M students explore their interest in aviation and maritime through a progression of thematic experiences from broad exposure, evolving into individualized post-secondary plans,” Jones told the CMSD Board.

The school, located in downtown Cleveland, prides itself on the following student high lights:

  • Water Rescues
  • Waterways Management
  • NASA Capstone Program
  • Current Flight Groups
  • First Robotics
  • Prosthetics

The schools’ impressive list of community partners includes:

  • Port of Cleveland
  • United Airlines
  • Flexjet
  • Great Lakes Science Center
  • Cleveland Amateur Boatbuilding and Boating Society
