Greetings CMSD Families and Friends, I hope your summer break has been filled with memorable moments—whether you took advantage of our enriching Summer Soundtrack learning programs or simply soaked up the sun and spent quality time with loved ones.
I am entering into my second year as CEO, and I am proud of our district’s progress. During my first year, our schools demonstrated academic growth over the prior school year in English Language Arts, Math, Attendance, and college applications for nearly every demographic group across race and ability. We slowed the rate of suspensions and negotiated a pay increase for staff from multiple bargaining units, all while making some tough budget decisions to ensure financial sustainability. I’m proud to share that we ended the school year with 37 of our schools achieving 90% or better parent-teacher conference attendance—5 of these schools even reached 100%! While there is still a lot of work to do, let’s maintain this momentum and continue to work together to support our scholars.
Our dedicated educators have been working hard this summer participating in professional development and preparing for the year. Last week, we held our annual Convocation, where CMSD staff come together to get inspired for the year ahead. This year our theme focused on discovering our “why” and connecting it to the work we do every day in CMSD. I shared my personal story and how the challenges, struggles, and opportunities I experienced shaped my “why” I am so passionate about this work. Check out some of the photos below of participation from around the system, as well as other photos of summer engagement as we prepare for the 24-25 school.
As I think about the success of our scholars, this year CMSD schools will now be cell phone-free spaces. This initiative is aimed at maximizing teaching and learning in the classroom by ensuring scholars are fully present. While we recognize the significant role technology plays in our lives, we’ve seen that learning and social behavior improve dramatically when students are fully engaged with their teachers and peers.
To prepare for the upcoming school year, we’ve created a back-to-school resource page filled with helpful information to ensure you and your family have the tools you need for a successful school year. From school supply lists to transportation details, everything you need to know is just a click away. Finally, I’m thrilled to share a special video message from Mayor Justin Bibb welcoming you back to what promises to be an incredible school year. Be sure to check it out below!
This new school year will be one of growth, new experiences, and boundless opportunities for our scholars. Let’s make this school year one of collaboration, achievement, and joy.
Yours in Gratitude, Dr. Warren G. Morgan
